Class Conflict in the Great Gatsby free essay sample

The Great Gatsby, is the theme of society and class. Three separate social classes are portrayed in the novel: â€Å"old money,† â€Å"new money,† and the lowest class known as â€Å"no money. † The â€Å"old money† class refers to those who come from families that have fortunes. â€Å"New money† families are those who made their money in the Roaring Twenties and often lavishly display their wealth. In the novel, the growing tension between the â€Å"old† and the â€Å"new† money classes are shown through Gatsby and Tom’s struggle over Daisy. The novel’s narrator, Nick Carraway, begins the novel by sharing advice his father gave him when he was younger: do not criticize others because â€Å"all the people in this world haven’t had the advantages that [he has] had† (1). Nick’s father informs his son that his advantage over most people in the world is that he comes the â€Å"old money† class. Nick â€Å"lived at West Egg – well, the less fashionable of the two† (5) which is located directly across the bay from East Egg. Throughout the novel, Nick observes how greatly the two communities differ. Their location, across the water from one another, symbolically shows the class rivalry because they literally opposed each other. West Egg is where the â€Å"new money† echelon lives, and East Egg does not accept them because they have neither cultural refinement nor social connections. Nick’s character is odd because he spans both worlds; he comes from â€Å"old money† but rents a house in West Egg, where the â€Å"new money† class resides. Within the novel, Fitzgerald constantly criticizes those with â€Å"new money† values by expressing their values as thoughtless and ignorant. Daisy, who both Gatsby and Tom are drawn by, has a difficulty in understanding the structure of West Egg because she normally does whatever society expects from her – she is not used to the carelessness of the â€Å"new money† class: Who is this Gatsby anyhow? demanded Tom suddenly. Some big bootlegger? Where’d you hear that? I inquired. I didn’t hear it. I imagined it. A lot of these newly rich people are just big bootleggers, you know. Not Gatsby, I said shortly. He was silent for a moment. The pebbles of the drive crunched under his feet. Well, he certainly must have strained himself to get this menagerie together. A breeze stirred the gray haze of Daisy’s fur collar. At least they’re more interesting than the people we know, she said with an effort. (6. 98-105) By juxtaposing Gatsby and Daisy, Fitzgerald distinctly reveals the idiocy of the â€Å"new money† class. Daisy comes from an environment with true values and stiff behavior, and when placed in West Egg she finds herself unable to live with such negligence. The theme of this novel, the hollowness of the upper class, is similarly portrayed at the very end of the novel after the death of Gatsby. The day before Gatsby’s funeral, Nick goes around in an effort to assemble more people to attend the services. He goes to New York to try to get Meyer Wolfsheim, a friend of Gatsby, to attend the ceremony. Wolfsheim reflects on his friendship with Gatsby, and he claims that he â€Å"raised him up out of nothing. † But he tells Nick that he can’t go because he can’t get mixed up† with dead men (171). Wolfsheim is unscrupulous, selfish, and heartless, he exhibits the worst facet of â€Å"new money†. He claims that he raised Gatsby from the â€Å"gutters† and in doing so he insinuates that money is everything. â€Å"Who is rich? He who is happy with his lot† (Pirkei Avot 4:1). As portrayed through this novel, money corrupts both society and class. In the end, the only people that bear happiness are those who are not deluded by riches. Scott Fitzgerald uses Jay Gatsby’s parties to present a satirical portrait of the Roaring Twenties. The U. S. faced an enormous economic expansion after World War I, which turned the 1920s into a time of easy money, ample drinking, and sumptuous parties. During this time period people were filled with optimism towards the future, but through this novel, Fitzgerald conveys a darker side of this time period. His portrait of the Roaring Twenties focuses on the hypocrisy and recklessness of the people during that time. While attending a party at Gatsby’s house, Nick observes the luxuriousness of the party. On the outside, the parties seem to hold the fulfillment of the American Dream, but Fitzgerald harshly shows that this is not the case. At the conclusion of the party that night, Nick says goodbye to Gatsby and leaves. On his way back home he sees that Owl Eyes, a guest at Gatsby’s party, has driven his car into a ditch, which to Nick â€Å"the fact [is] infinitely astonishing† (53). Symbolically, this crash represents the reckless disregard of society during this time period. Fitzgerald paints this scene after the party at Gatsby’s house to show that the recklessness of the parties lives on even after the matter. After the party environment dies down, Nick describes his life to the reader, presenting that he is different than most others by clearly expressing that he does more than just party. In chapter 3, Fitzgerald spends most of the pages on showing the carelessness of people’s actions during the Roaring Twenties. The juxtaposition of Nick’s lifestyle to the party lifestyle clearly emulates his bleak feeling toward the 1920s. Yet Fitzgerald’s harshest criticism of this time period does not present itself until the last chapter. Two years subsequent to Gatsby’s death, Nick remembers back to the days shortly after his death, in which he remembers the rumors that spread, and people prowling around his mansion to search for more gossip about him: I remember the rest of that day, and that night and the next day, only as an endless drill of police and photographers and newspaper men in and out of Gatsby’s front door†¦The adventitious authority of [Wilson’s] voice set the key for the newspaper reports next morning. Most of those reports were a nightmare – grotesque, circumstantial, eager, and untrue. When Michaelis’s testimony at the inquest brought to light Wilson’s suspicions of his wife I thought the whole tale would shortly be served up in racy pasquinade – but Catherine, who might have said anything, didn’t say a word. She showed a surprising amount of character about it too – looked at the coroner with determined eyes under that corrected brow of hers, and swore that her sister had never seen Gatsby, that her sister was completely happy with her husband, that her sister had been into no mischief whatever. 163) Similar to Roaring Twenties the reports about Gatsby quickly spread and were filled mostly with lies and deceit. The fact that Gatsby was the same both dead and alive, little more than a rumor, Fitzgerald sardonically portrays the issues within the Roaring Twenties’ â€Å"new money† ideology. The Roaring Twenties was an era of great economic growth; but despite the economies success, â€Å"new money† ideology removed individualism and rationality from society in favor of carelessness.

The commercial portrays a man simply trying to do what is best for his career and life in general, while being scrutinized by millions of people. He is his own man and does not have to follow the paths dictated by previous greats or what the fans want for him. LeBron James would like us to think that he is simply too confident in his own abilities to care what other people think of him.This is the attitude he carries in the ad as he tries to sell you his new Nike Air Max LeBron VIII shoes. James asks several questions in the new ad, beginning with What should I do? Throughout the commercial, James brings up the variety of different criticisms he took for his decision. The commercial ends with the most significant question: Should I be who you want me to be? The commercial begins with a scene depicting the ESPN Decision Special. The ad quickly changes its tone as James asks, â€Å"Should I remind you I have done this before?Should I give you a history lesson? † This scene has James in high school staring at all his trophies and accomplishments. This reminds the audience that he may be hated now, but the fact that his praise was earned from his astonishing talent cannot be discounted. He was the number one overall pick of the NBA draft and brought seven amazing years to a franchise that was dead last in the league. This also plays into the next scene. James is in Cleveland driving by the giant WE ARE ALL WITNESSES† banner of him doing the signature powder toss, as it is being torn down. While this is happening he asks, â€Å"Should I tell you how much fun we had? † Once again, this is playing directly into the emotional approach of pathos. A nostalgic feeling sets over the audience as they remember all the great memories he brought to the city of Cleveland, the NBA and the world of sports. This is a great approach to use in this segment because most people’s reactions on the decision were based off emotion. This especially hit home with Clevelanders that watched their home born star rise through AAU, high school and now the professional ranks.All over the nation Cavaliers fan’s hearts sunk to their stomach as the words, â€Å"I will be taking my talents to South, Beach† left the king’s mouth. 3 In the next scene James asks, â€Å"Should I really believe I ruined my legacy†, at an empty podium speaking to an empty room at a mock Hall of Fame induction. â€Å"So this went well,† James says sarcastically as the scene all udes to Jordan’s famous Hall of Fame speech. After Jordan gave his speech, he received some negative feedback. This reminds people that even the almighty Michael Jordan made mistakes or said things out of line, but he believed what he said and backed it up.He did all this despite the supposed damaged brand and former fans swearing they would not support him anymore. Although he did generate a new fan base in Miami, this ad may have proven to persuade some newly born Lebron haters. By taking such a strong stance and fighting back, James opens the door to a new persona. He asks â€Å"Should I accept this role as a villain? † as he is holding a pistol dressed as an old outlaw. This shows James contemplating whether he should try and win the love of the fans back or embrace the hate, once again playing the appeal of pathos. James wants the audience to feel bad for pushing him into the villain role. The Lebron James everyone loved and is used to seeing is gone. The guy who used to smile all the time and celebrate with his teammates is gone. The audience might not want to let that past feeling go and may feel bad for pushing him to the â€Å"dark side. † The problem with this approach is most people understand James put himself into this situation. Nearing the end of the ad James is at the wheel of a bulldozer tearing through a basketball arena.This exemplifies James trying to rebuild his image with this ad and that he really just wants everyone to forget about what happened. Rebuilding his image is not only about people liking him but the benefits of sales and promotions as well. Obviously being liked sold plenty of products but will being the bad guy lure a new fan base? This uses the appeal of pathos 5 and how many people wish they could have the slate cleaned and start fresh. Ethos is applied as well as James establishes an authoritative presence, as well as someone who is worthy of and demands respect.The ad ends with LeBron asking, â€Å"Should I be who you want me to be? †, while pictures flash of scenes in the commercial and James laying the ball up. This is one final attempt to point out how unfair demands of the fans are. With all this in mind, there lays the question, Should he be who you think he should be? Or more importantly, should we buy his shoes. The slogan â€Å"Just do it† and the Nike swoosh fade in and out reminding you the same company that endorses the great Michael Jordan is doing the same with Lebron. Nikes credibility solidifies this persuasive ad urging you to just do it, to just buy the shoes.

Past and Present Participles There are two types of participles in English, and each type is used in a variety of ways. Present Participles The first type of participle is the present participle. The present participle is often referred to as the -ing form of the verb. Do they want to remember a wonderful life full of expieriences, or a life where they never really lived? The theme of the unlived life in The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock manifests through the narrator as he truly embodies the realistic fact that some people out there are introverted, living in fear, and worrying to much about what society does not approve of them. Life is not going to live for one, one must live for life. Introversion is presented throughout The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock and presents how one person’s fear can limit their life. The character of J. Alfred Prufrock displays this attribute when he states, â€Å"And I have known the eyes already, known them all – The eyes that fix you in a formulated phrase, And when I am formulated, sprawling on a pin,When I am pinned and wriggling on the wall† (Lines 55-58). This quote gives readers the sense of Prufrocks true insecurities. It also provides evidence into how he wanted to blend in and not really socialize at all. Prufrock again states, â€Å"There will be time, there will be time to prepare a face to meet the faces that you meetâ€Å" This shows how prufrock did not feel ready for society, another form of introversy. It also procides insight into the fact that Prufrock seperated himself from people and that he fealt unready for interaction. Lastly Prufrock again states, â€Å"And indeed there will be timeTo wonder, ‘Do I dare?‘ and, ‘Do I dare?‘â€Å" This hsows how Prufrock was so estranged from society and how introverted he was. It also gives a sense of hope and a want to break this introversy with the statements of â€Å"Do i dare â€Å". Another clear point that is presented by the Author is Prufrock’s life of fear. As Prufrock said,â€Å"With a bald spot in the middle of my hair They will say: ‘How his hair is growing thin!‘†(Lines 40-41) This statement shows how prifrock was so insecure and afraid of what people think. It also shows his clear fear of rejection. Prufrock again states, â€Å"They will say: But how his arms and legs are thin!( line 44) This statement proves the fact that again Prufrock is truly afraid of society. It also shows His total insecurities. Lastly Prufrock says,†Streets that follow like a tedious argument Of insidious intentâ€Å"(Line 8-9) again Prufrock, shows that he even fears the streets of his neighborhood. It also shows how his fear makes him even afraid of the street. Lastly presented was the worrying of what society thinks.And I have known the arms already, known them all – Arms that are braceleted and white and bare[But in the lamplight, downed with light brown hair!] This statement shows his complete fear of what society will think. It shows how he almost feels trapped by societys expectations. Prufrock also states,†Shall I part my hair behind? Do I dare to eat a peach?I shall wear white flannel trousers, and walk upon the beach.† This shows how he wants to be set free but does not feel as though it is a possibility. it also shows the fact that prufrock wanted to be free with himself and live but was tied down. Lastly he says â€Å"Time for you and time for me,And time yet for a hundred indecisions, And for a hundred visions and revisions, Before the taking of a toast and tea. â€Å" This last quote shows how he feels the need to revise himself for society. Also this shows his insecurities due to societys pressure. In conclusion the theme of the unlived life in The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock comes through as the narrator embodies the realistic fact that some people out there are introverted, living in fear, and worrying to much about what society does not approve of them. It shows that fear becomes an enemy to life and is a component in the detriment of a person’s social status and well being.

A Womens Perspective of the Civil War Essay -- Women in the Civil War

For a long time, the Civil War was the most glorified and â€Å"cleaned for the purpose of propaganda† conflict in world history. The war was fought between celebrated generals Robert E. Lee and Ulysses S. Grant, whose armies fought for grand and noble principles and were never guilty of any of the heinous war crimes perpetrated by other armies. The inclination to depict the Civil War in this glorified manner strengthened over time until the process of converting the Civil War from hell on earth to a sacred cause systematically destroyed the anguish that the war created. The war the women on both sides of the conflict experienced underwent a comparable change because it reminded the victims of their suffering. Unfortunately, some historians have been too worried about correcting the evils committed against women during the Civil War to look at the reasons why the war and its suffering have been sanitized. Focusing on the woman’s point of view during the Civil War, espec ially the African American woman’s point of view, meant focusing on misery. By removing women from the overall picture of the Civil War, historians could ignore the misery and create a more affirmative representation of the Civil War. Until recently, the most basic historiographies of Civil War women were made of three parts. These included Northern women and the lasting consequences of their participation in the Civil War; Southern women, their encouragement or non-encouragement of the Confederate government and military, and their responsibility for the advancement of the Lost Cause; and African American women, whose experiences were a bit difficult to describe for lack of personal accounts. Depression can occur in all types of people, including, the young, the old, the rich, and the poor. Adolescents in particular seem to be at risk for becoming depressed (Jormer and Coyne 20) . Adolescents living in poor neighborhoods may be at an increased risk because of additional problems that poverty may cause. There are, in fact, many things in an adolescent’s life that can contribute to depression, drug abuse being a major factor. Drug abuse is a major cause of depression in adolescents who live in poor neighborhoods. Drug abuse is defined is the habitual use of drugs to alter one’s mood, emotion, or state of consciousness. As a teenager, using drugs can be an easy habit to obtain (Cockett 5) . A teen may begin drug abuse because all of their friends are trying it and the peer pressure is too great to resist. Or maybe the teen is going through a stage in his or her life where they feel the need to experiment with drugs. Adolescents are also known to partake in more risk taking activities. After a teens first drug experience a gateway may be opened for addiction and drug abuse (Cockett 20) . There are signs and symptoms of drug abuse that are noticeable in adolescents. These signs can be noticed in the physical appearance of the adolescent, as well as the adolescent’s emotional state. Physical signs may include serious symptoms such as tremors or something more minor like changes in eating habits (Finding Hope and Health: Alcohol and Drug Abuse and Depression 1) . There may also be noticeable changes in the teen’s academic performance. Drug abuse has been known to lower a person’s work ethic. The result of lowered work ethic is often a significant drop in grades, and also an increase in the number of classes missed (Blackman 2) . Living in a poor neighborhood means living in a poor household. There are many disadvantages to living in poor households. One disadvantage for teens is that they are at a greater risk to become addicted to drugs. This may be because of a lack of parental supervision. Often in poor households there is only one parent present. In these single parent homes it is harder for the parent to make time for their children. This is because they are forced to work low paying jobs with long hours. Another factor that may lead to a lack of supervision is both parents having to go to work and having to work long hours because the family is poor. A parent talking to their children about drugs is a major step in the prevention of drug abuse so if there is a lack of parental supervision this major preventive step may not be taken. Another reason teens in poor households become drug abusers lies in their surroundings. Drugs are easy to access in poor communities. The drugs are easier to acces s because of visible drug dealers so-called â€Å"bad neighborhoods† that often go hand in hand with poverty. If a teen sees these drug deals happening they may become curious and become involved in drug usage, or perhaps even drug sales. It also may seem to be the norm if teens see it all the time (Saxe 1) . Drug abuse in poor households can lead to a depressive state in teens. In poor households there may be a lack of social support. Social support has a major impact on the health of adolescents. There are many ways to produce good health, and central to this process are people, as members of households and members of communities. A lack of social support means that adolescents in impoverished households may not have anyone to talk to about their problems with drugs, which could put them into more of a tailspin. This may cause them to spin out of control and may lead to a depressive state. The surroundings in poor neighborhoods add to lifestyle problems. In homes where poverty is prevalent, there is an increased risk that the family will experience physical, emotional, or sexual abuse. There may also be a family history of drug abuse or other addictions in poverty-stricken homes. Also, if a family is living in poverty, they may already have many other problems and may feel like they are not going anywhere in live. This leads to feelings of hopelessness and may put an adolescent to go down the path of drug abuse and depression (Leukfeld and Bukoski 9) . There are signs and symptoms of depression that are noticeable in teens. The depressed may start to wear a different style of clothing, or may begin to dislike what used to be their favorite activities. There are also emotional changes that occur due to depression. The depressed teen may start to develop a more aggressive personality, or may start to frequently talk about death. The depressed teen may become more prone to conflict, and start to get in trouble with authority figures (Teen Depression 4) . However these symptoms may be difficult for guardians to notice. This is because guardians often discard these signs and treat them as no more then teenage mood swings (Blackman 1) . Blackman states that â€Å"Adolescence is a time of emotional turmoil, mood lability, gloomy introspection, great drama and heightened intensity. It is a time of rebellion and behavioral experimentation.† (1) . Another sign that may be noticeable is the academic performance of the teenager. Depression makes the teen have trouble concentrating on their school work. The lack of concentration combined with lower interest levels, results in to a poor academic performance (Teen Depression 3) . There are certain problems regarding depression that arise in poor households. The only way to combat this mental illness is an effective treatment strategy. This is where the problems start. It makes it difficult to treat depression if the underlying problems that cause depression remain. In poor neighborhoods, many of the residents are single parent families. There is a lack of supervision in single parent homes due to the absence of a parent or guardian. Another frequently arising supervision problem is that two parents must work. The two parents are forced to work because there is a shortage of well paying jobs in poor communities (Mallory and Stamler 285) . So both parents must both work low paying jobs in order to provide the necessities for their families. Treatment facilities are an important tool in the battle against depression. In poor neighborhoods there may be basic hospitals, but there may not be any specialized facilities that will better treat depression. T here may also be no access to treatment facilities due to financial barriers. Income and socioeconomic status greatly influence health. The lower the level of income in a family, the more problems there are. An example of this would be the lack of transportation that is available to go to the treatment facilities. Another example of a problem associated with low income families is the low amount of income will not be enough to pay for the specialized treatment. Poor households may also be unable to afford insurance which would cover the treatment or their lower paying jobs may not provide insurance. These factors often leave the depression undetected and therefore untreated (Mallory and Stamler 286) . Depression is a major problem in today’s world. The number of adolescents that are committing suicide is increasing at a rapid rate. Most of these teens that are committing suicide are suffering from depression (Blackman 1) . There is a need to find ways to combat this illness. In order to combat depression, we must first combat some of the problems that cause depression, such as drug abuse (Sharp and Marrs 522) . During recent years the government has been waging a war on drugs. This effort has been somewhat unsuccessful. In order to successfully combat drug abuse we need to address the issue of poverty (Perkins 1) . First of all there needs to be access to good jobs with adequate income, as well as benefits to the employees. We need to create an effective child benefit system to combat poverty in Canadian households. There needs to be more accessible and affordable early learning and childhood programs. These programs must be available so that children can be educat ed and looked after in good quality childcare while their parents work. There is also a need for national affordable housing programs. These housing programs will greatly improve impoverished living conditions. These ideas are possible if our society and government continue to be aware of the major problem of poverty (Mallory and Stamler 287) . Therefore the call of repentance and belief should still be the theme in the church. Jesus came to serve not to be served, and he sacrificed his life for all mankind, so the church should illustrate this kind of servant hood as emphasised by Lightfoot, The purpose of the Lords manifestation in the future is not so much to introduce a new order of things, but rather to complete that which already exists. The church can be transformed through the influence of Marks gospel by compelling to a divine mission of not our own agenda but that of Christ and acknowledging for who He is (8: 29) He asked them, But who do you say that I am? Peter answered him, You are the Messiah. Dependency on God is a requirement today as much as interdependency to each other working in unity in order to continue reaching out with the gospel regardless of criticism and opposition as according to Mark. **Jesus often warned His disciples of the hardship and suffering that they would encounter as He did. The Church still faces persecution as in the days of Mark, but we are encouraged to remain steadfast in our faith as then. The characteristics and theological aims, of Marks Gospel teach the church, representative of Christ, to continue spreading the word of God. Discipleship is  a part of life for Christians as clearly demonstrated in Mark.   Known as missionaries today, discipleship duties of servant hood is still the core that is required, and through the teachings of Jesus who encountered both the sick and the sinful in this gospel transformation is relevant and still acts as a model for the church. Jesus has always been the representation of the just man, who was treated unjustly, but he responded with patience and he did not lose hope and trust in God. The theological aim of evangelism should be another influence in church as expressed in the first verse of Mark, to proclaim that Jesus is son of God and saviour. The need to lose one self remains as necessary and true now as it was then. In terms of discipleship it is from Jesus that discipleship started and that is still a relevant characteristic in church to follow the example of Jesus, which is another influence in understanding of Christian faith. Mark expressed a high degree of honesty in the disciples of Jesus then by giving an account about their misunderstanding of what Jesus was telling them and the fearful reaction of the events that surrounded the resurrection which mirrors the weakness in the church. Consumed by pride of who is the greatest and not confronting the fear of being misunderstood, has overwhelmed the church of the twenty first century. The church should continue to teach that true discipleship is only possible after the resurrection as stated in Mark, and thats when the full significance of the life, death and resurrection of Jesus can be known. The church today has no excuse than those first followers if it does not teach the believers to take up the cross and follow Jesus. The Gospel of Mark strengthened his listeners to stand strong in their faith even through a period of persecution as Jesus did; it is a characteristic that still needs to influence the church as it has never stopped being persecuted even in this 21st century. The importance of faith is stressed as the ambience in which Jesus mighty works were performed (6: 5, 6) From the analysis of the main features in Marks gospel, it becomes possible to draw certain conclusions in regards to his intention. Jesus prepared himself to total obedience to God as introduced by Mark The Son of God. The church should continue to have total faith and obedience in God as Jesus did in order not to deviate from the truth. It could be argued to a certain extent that the teaching and actions of Jesus have a continuing value in both Christian life and death and that the death of Jesus was not in vain. Therefore, according to the examination of the above characteristics and theological aims in Marks gospel, the church should still be strongly influenced, by that same message of redemption by following the example of Jesus who was a servant of the Lord regardless of deeds of suffering, strengthening in the faith and continue to spread the good news according to the gospel of Mark. (10: 44-45) And whoever wants to be first must be slave of all. For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.

At the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich, scientists created golden rice by inserting three genes into a certain rice variety which will in turn produce a greater amount of beta-carotene. This rice has a sort of yellowish hue, which has given the rice its name, golden rice. If this rice is found to be safe and effective it will be a tool in providing these rice dependent countries with the nutrients they need. In places such as India, they used to eat brown rice, which is more nutritious because the outer bran layer is not removed during the milling process. When the British came to India they introduced white rice, which means the milling process has been taken to one further step. This reduces the amount of nutrients such as thiamine. White rice is now the major type of rice eaten in these Asian and Pacific countries. This has led to serious problems of malnutrition. Since normal rice does not have any beta-carotene, which is the precursor to Vitamin A, these populations are having vitamin a deficiencies. The World Health Organization stated that about 250 million people worldwide are at risk of permanent blindness, iron deficiency in women, and other serious ailments due to their lack of vitamin A. This genetically modified rice, known as â€Å"golden rice† has been created to meet the nutritional needs of these malnourished populations. Genetic engineering has become a world-wide issue. Hungry countries in Africa, such as Zimbabwe, whose population is as risk for starvation and death are skeptical about receiving genetically altered food from countries such as the United States. In China, a rice known as â€Å"super rice† has been created which is more resilient; but it has not been accepted by the Chinese markets because it is genetically altered. People are more interested in their food than ever before, and are concerned about their overall safety. They want to know where it comes from and if it has been altered from its natural state.

Entrance Nursing

Children pretend and use their imaginations to carry out their inner dreams. From playing doctor to wearing a firefighter’s hat as children we already have it set in our minds the roles we want to play in our adult lives. As a child I always had the desire to help people in need. If a friend fell while playing tag I would stop to help, when my younger siblings would cry I would always offer my candy and a hug. I learned that helping others made me feel good. It was something I loved.While becoming a woman I only embrace this love even more. Although I did not comprehend that these small gestures as a child would soon lead me into a path of nursing, I am truly aware that they have opened a place in my heart for a career as a nurse. Over the years I have assimilated the remedy of caring and understanding the medical needs of various individuals. I now understand that medical needs are not just cured with medicine alone; but with care, nurture and support received during the reco very period.For example, if you treat someone as if they are sick and not reinsure him or her that they can possibly get better; that person will continue to feel sick and have no ambition in recovery. I understand through my own personal experience that nurses/caregivers/doctors can pave the way for a person to find a balance and harmony within the mind, body and soul; which would promote a greater amount of health in a person and a sense of serenity. I believe through my life changing experiences I can make a difference in the lives of those in need and also helping those recover from their ailments.My first life changing experience was my first job at the age of 14. I received my working documents and had the privilege to work in the Admissions department at Metropolitan Hospital. The office was right outside the Emergency Room. I remember having front row seats to the different traumas that entered the hospital. The one experience that I will not forget was the time a teenage bo y was rushed in after being hit by a car while riding his bike. He was not severely hurt, just in pain waiting for his parents to arrive.My initial reaction was to help him and keep him company until his parents arrived. I was completely helpless but still felt the need to do something. The only thing that came to mind was purchasing the young boy a bag of potato chips and a can of soda from the vending machine. I gave it to him and he smiled and thanked me. I felt a sense of gratification but did not realize how much that small gesture helped him with his fear of being in the hospital. It made him comfortable and open to receiving care from the doctor if necessary and made me realize I wanted to pursue a career in nursing.My second life changing experience was in the year of 2007 in which I had the chance to participate in the delivery of a baby. My friend asked me to accompany her while she gave birth to her daughter. I was honored and extremely excited. I recall being extra suppo rtive during her periods of contractions; rubbing her back, getting her ice, assuring her that everything will be okay and telling her to breathe. I do not have any children of my own so this was all new to me yet I was ecstatic and prepared give all the help I could.I recall when it was time for her to deliver her baby; I held one leg while the nurse held the other. We both encouraged her to push and I held her hand at her request. I will never forget the feeling that I had from watching life being brought to this world. I also had a newfound respect for mothers, but also for nurses and doctors. I realized that working in this field is not a job but a lifestyle. You must prepare yourself for different situations such as births, deaths, and ailments. You have to be supportive and considerate to different kind of emotions.After taking place in this experience I have decided that I when I become a nurse I want to work in the Labor and Delivery unit. I want to contribute with bringing life to the world and happiness to an entire family. I enjoy being a part of that support system, especially for those mothers that do not have a support team of their own outside of the hospital staff. My final, but most important, life changing experience occurred in 2008. This was the year that I was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis (MS).As a teen many circumstances forced me to live on my own at the age of 16, yet I managed to graduate from high school and find a job working with the mentally disabled. At 18 years old, I got my own apartment and had took on the responsibility of caring for my two younger brothers, whom I provided both emotional and financial support to. I had to provide housing and try my hardest to teach them responsibility although I was learning myself. This caused me to have to take on more hours at work and play a major role I was much unprepared for.Throughout life I have been so focused on providing and supporting others that I forgot to properly care fo r myself. I ignored all the symptoms of my disease for years until my body finally gave up and I had to be hospitalized. Though this may seem like a detrimental period of my life, it wasn’t. I had lots of love from family and friends but the nurses played a significant role in my recovery; not just physically but emotionally, mentally and spiritually. They were very helpful, nurturing, kind, and thoughtful and gave me the confidence needed to pull through this tragic moment in my life.The nurses and doctors vigorously reassured me that things would get better. They gave me energy, made me smile, and most of all they helped prepare me for my journey ahead allowing me to deal with my life long friend (MS). This life changing experience gave me the opportunity to intertwine the incident of being the patient and learning how to properly treat and care for a patient when I start in my career of being a nurse. Medical care is much more than a prescription from a pad, a needle to th e vein, an x-ray or a simple checkup. It includes the love and care that comes from within.You need an attitude that will stand firm with the fight against an ailment as well as be understanding when a patient is giving a hard time because he or she is afraid and does not comprehend their situation. Survival in Auschwitz - The Nazi Assault on Humanity essays Twenty five year old Primo Levi, a chemist (and poet) who was an Italian citizen of Jewish Race, was arrested for being a member of the anti-Fascist resistance by Italian fascists and taken from his native Turin in Northern Italy to Auschwitz. Along with about 650 others he was transported by freight train. There were 45 people in Primos car. Only four of them saw their homes again. The trip took about 4 days and they were not given any food or water, and were not permitted to leave the train for any reason on its many stops. When they arrived at Auschwitz, Poland, they were subjected to the first of several selections into groups. The German SS soldiers divided them into two groups, the ones who could work and the ones who couldnt such as women, children, and older men. Husbands and wives were split from each other with the promise they would be together again later. One hundred and thirty-five on Levis train went into Auschwitz and the rest straight to the gas chamber. Of the 650 or so people who went on the train with Primo, fifteen men and nine women survived. They were herded into the camp after being stripped naked and having their heads shaved. They were given old striped uniforms and shoes made of cloth with wooden souls to wear. They each had an identification number tattooed on their arms just above the wrist. Primos number was 174517 (Hundert Vierundsiebzig Funf Hundert Siebzehn). The numbers signified the group they were with. The higher the number, the shorter the time they had been there. Primo felt humiliation as he was forced to grow accustomed to his new surroundings. The food rations were too small to ward off the hunger and thousands suffered and died as a result.
